Taking multivitamin and mineral products of the right quality and advancement have been shown to help reduce body weight and improve blood fat levels.
Studies have included obese women between the ages of 18 and 55, randomly assigned to one of three groups. One receiving a multivitamin and mineral supplement, the second taking a calcium supplement, and the third an identical placebo to the above.
After six months the results showed that women in the multivitamin and mineral group had significantly lower body weight, body mass index, and fat mass as compared to the others 2 group participants. Levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol were also significantly reduced, while HDL (good) cholesterol levels increased.
The calcium group only experienced cholesterol improvements, with HDL levels increasing and LDL decreasing, compared with the placebo group.
Obesity rates have soared in the US in recent years, and other countries such as Australia and the UK, for example, are quickly following suit. It is one of the largest health problems we face in the Western world.
On top of this, it is widely known that the foods we are eating have less nutrition than ever before. Soil depletion, over processing, artificial ingredients and improper cooking methods (such as frying) all lead to more calories but fewer nutrients consumed on a daily basis.
It's possible that restoring vitamins and minerals in our bodies through correct supplementation may just curb the need for our bodies to search out further nutrients from foods, which often results in comfort-eating, from food sources that provide little nutritional value.
